　東京都は、国際化・情報化という時代の要請に応え、臨海部に未来型都市を創り出すため取り組んでいます。この臨海副都心は、4つの地区に分けられ、それぞれ個性的なまちづくりを行なっています。21世紀初頭には、約448haの埋立地に人々がいきいきと働き、快適なくらしを楽しむ新しいウォーターフロント都市が誕生します。
　臨海副都心は、都心から直線約6kmの距離にありながら水域に隔てられ、交通の不便な所となっていました。レインボーブリッジは、臨海副都心と都心との間の交通事情を改善するため、臨港道路、新交通システム、首都高速12号線からなる複合交通施設として誕生しました。

　レインボーブリッジは、東京港の中心部に完成した吊り橋で、東京港の「新しいシンボル」です。橋の展望台や遊歩道からは、上空に羽田空港へ発着する飛行機や、眼下には史跡「お台場」や行き来する船が見えます。立ち並ぶクレーンや客船ターミナル、再開発が進む港のウォーターフロントや都心の高層ビル群が眺められ、遠くには富士山や京浜・京葉の臨海コンビナートも望めます。また夜にはこの橋全体がライトアップされて、海面に美しいシルエットを映し、都心のビルの照明と共に素晴らしい景観を見せてくれるでしょう。

　レインボーブリッジには遊歩道・レインボープロムナードがあり、サウスルートとノースルートの二つに分かれています。サウスルートは、史跡のお台場や大井コンテナターミナルなどの港湾施設、遠くに富士山が望めます。また、ノースルートは東京タワーをはじめ大都市の高層ビル群が一望にでき、国際都市Tokyoを海上から眺めることが出来ます。



 The Tokyo metoropolitan Government has embarked on the construction of a future metropolitan subcenter by the sea,to meet the needs of an international, information-based age. This waterfront subcenter is divided into four districts,each of which has a distinct personality.By the beginning of the 21st century,people will be happily working and relaxing in a new waterfront city build on about 448 hectares of reclaimed land.
 The woterfront subcenter will be around 6 kilometers from the center of Tokyo in a straight line,but transport is inconvenient since it is separated by water.The Rainbow bridge was designed as a composite transport facility to carry the port road, anew transit system, and route 12 of the metoropolitan Expressway, thus improving trnsport links between the waterfront subcenter and the center of Tokyo.

 The Rainbow Bridge is a suspension bridge which has been built in the center of the Port of Tokyo, and is a new synmbol of the Port.From the observation points and the Promenades,you can see overhead the planes heading to and from haneda Airport,andunderneath you can see ships passing and also the historic "Odaiba".Also visible are the dockside cranes and passenger terminals,the waterfront zone which is undergoing redevelopment,and the Keihin/keiyou oil refineries.
At night the whole bridge is lit ut, projecting a beautiful silhouette onto the water and blending in with lights of city buildings.

 The rinbow promenade is divided into the North Route and the South Route. On the South Route, you can see the historical monument of Odaiba and port facilities such as oh-i Container Terminal, with Mount Fuji in the distance. On the North Route, you can see the Tokyo Tower and the city skyscrapers, giving you a view of international Tokyo from the sea.
