高野長英の碑（善光寺）

　　高野長英の碑（1804－1850）
先生は岩手県水沢に生れ長崎でオランダ語と医学をおさめ西洋の科学と文化の進歩しておることを知り、発奮してこれらの学術を我国に早く広めようと貧苦の中に学徳を積んだ開国の先覚者であるその間に多くの門人を教え、又、訳書や著書八十餘を作ったが「夢物語」で幕府の疑いを受け遂に禁獄の身となり、47才で不幸な最後をとげた。最後の処は今の青山南町6丁目43の隠れ家で遺体の行方もわからなかったが明治31年先生に正四位が贈られたので、同郷人等が発起してこの寺に勝海舟の文の碑を建てた処、昭和戦災で大部分こわれた。よってここに残った元の碑の一部を保存し再建する。

 To the memory of a learnedman,CHOEI TAKANO(1804-1850) who was born at Mizusawa in Iwate Prefecture,studied Dutch and Medicine at Nagasaki Seeing the progress of science and civilization in Europe souoght to diffuse the same throughout his own country.Though poor all his life,he was a pioneer eminent in learning and virtye who tried to open Japan to the world.He is the author of more than 80 books,especially "Yume-monogatari" (The Tale of My Dreams),for which he was put into prison.He died aged 47,in hideng at what is now 43,6 Chome,Minami-machi,Aoyama.Though his remains were never   found,on him was conferred the Senior Grade of the Forth Court Rank in 1893.His compatlots erected the monument with the inscription by Kaishu Katsu in the enclosure of this temple,but greater part of it was damaged during the War.This is a  new monument erected along side the remains of the old.
