逆さイチョウ（善福寺）

　イチョウ（銀杏・公孫樹）は、イチョウ科の落葉高木で、中国原産といわれている。雌雄異株で、神社や寺院の境内樹・公園樹・庭園樹・街路樹として広く植栽されている。4月に開花し、10月には種子（イチョウの実）は成熟して独特の臭気を放ち、黄葉する。
　この木は雄株で、幹の上部が既に損なわれているが、幹周りは10.4メートルあり、都内のイチョウの中で最大の巨樹である。樹令は750年以上と推定される。
　善福寺は、昭和20年（1945）の東京大空襲によって本堂が全焼した際、このイチョウの木にもかなり被害があったが、いまなお往時の偉観をうかがうことができる。
　根がせり上がって、枝先が下に伸びているところから『逆さイチョウ』ともいわれ、また、親鸞聖人が地に差した杖から成長したとの伝説から『杖イチョウ』の別名もある。

　　Giant Ginkgo-Tree of Zempukuji
 The empukuji Temple,founded in 824 by Kobo Daishi (founder of the Shingon Sect of Buddhism),was converted in 1232 to a sanctuary of the Hodo-Shinshu Sect,as the abbot of the temple,Saint Ryokai,became the follower of Shinran-Shonin,the founder of that sect.This sect claims salvation by faith in Amitabha,who is invoked by the prayer formula Namu-Amida-Butsu.
 The legend goes that on leaving the temple after teaching Abbot Ryokai the doctrines of his sect,Shinran shonin put down his sraff in the ground,saying that such was the manner in which the prayer formula was to be propagated and the manner in which the common mortal would come to his end.Soon the staff began to put forth buds and spread branched,finally growing into a stately ginkgo-tree.In1926 the tree was designated a "Natural MOnument"by the Government.Itmeasures nearly 10 meters in girth and 20 meters in height,perhaps it's the oldest of its kind in Tokyo,although its trunk was burnt and broken by an incendiary bomb toward the end of the last war.
