旧細川邸のシイ

　高輪支所内の丘陵に上に独立する単木で、樹高10.8m、幹周り8.13m、枝張りは東に6.7m、西に2.7m、南に5.6m、北に5.8mを測る巨樹である。幹の下部に大きな空洞があったため、昭和56年（1981年）には大規模な外科手術を実施した。
　スジダイは、別名イタジイともナガジイとも呼ばれ、本州の福島県、新潟県以南、四国、九州、沖縄に分布するブナ科の常緑高木である。葉は長楕円形で先は尖り大きな鋸歯がある。果実は先の尖った卵円形で2年目に熟し食用になる。材は建築や家具用に、またパルプ材に使われている。
　旧細川邸とは、肥後熊本藩細川家の下屋敷のことであり、元禄16年（1703年）2月4日、赤穂事件大石内蔵助良雄・吉田忠左衛門兼亮・小野寺十内秀和・原惣右衛門元辰ら17人が切腹を命ぜられたところとして、屋敷跡は東京都指定旧跡に指定されている。

Kyu-Hosokawa-tei no Shii

This castanopsis sieboldii,a natural monument,is on the hill behind Takanawa Minato-ku office.Itused to be so huge that you had to gaza upwards,but the trunk was cut and the height is about 10m now.It doesn't grow in a rich environment because it stands in a very narrow space in a big city. But with its 8.1m of trunk circumference it is one of the most valuable castanopsis sieboldii in Tokyo.
Castanopsis sieboldii,which belongs to Fagaceae,are one of the major evergreen tall tree injapans warm temperate forests.These trees are not used for timber since they easily decay and bend,but the oval shaped fruits with sharp edges are edible.The tree stands on the grounds where the remains of Hosokawa family's Shimo-yashiki(one of the residences granted tofeudal lords by the Edo government)can be seen.Hosokawa family belonged to the Kumamoto clan.This place is well known for the story of Cyushingura revenge,when eventually samurais,including Yoshitaka-Kuranosuke Oishi,committed hara-kiri in 1703.
